“Has it been warmer or colder lately in Alaska?” Answer: “It’s complicated.”

Why? Alaska is a very large region with complex geography and sparse data availability.

Here you can see a statewide temperature index: a simple indicator that balances accessible information on temperature variation with the complexity of Alaska’s climate.

The graph shows the average temperature across Alaska each day, and compares it to the historical average. You can show up to 2 years of data by adjusting the date range on the graph.
